Secretary is about a young woman who comes out of her shell, learns what she is really about, and true love wins out in the end.
Spoiler Alert.
Maggie is compulsive about cutting herself. She finishes a hospital stint and goes to live with her parents. She decides to get a job, and starts working for a lawyer.
The lawyer has a slight problem. He is a pervert. Somehow, he manages to only hire submissive women, and ends up in a relationship with each one. After a while he feels like he has taken advantage of them, so he gives them a huge severance check and fires them. Since this is movieland, no one ever files harassment charges.
So meek Maggie starts working for the pervert. She is a social cripple. Does not know how to carry herself, how to dress for an office environment, how to answer the phone etc. The lawyer starts teaching her all these things. She grows tremendously, and a trust develops.
Once they have the rolls set, he calls her into his office to point out mistakes in a letter she has typed. He tells her to bend over his desk and read the letter. As she reads it, he starts to spank her. This is the turning point. Will she submit, or will she slap him and leave? She is shocked, but finds she really, really enjoys the discipline.
Things progress. Maggie starts making mistakes on purpose so she will need to be disciplined. Under his spell, Maggie transforms from a meek woman, to a very strong woman. Who likes to be spanked. Go figure. Anyway, under his spell, Maggie finally, for the first time in her life, feels alive and confident.
Unfortunately, right about now, the lawyer's conscience kicks in, and he does the severance routine. Maggie is devastated. All this time she has been engaged to be married to a nice young man. The wedding day arrives, and she is at the church, or on her way, or something like that. She decides she can't go through with it, and that she HAS to have her lawyer back. She goes to his office, plants herself at his desk, and announces that she is not going anywhere until he marries her.
The next part is the really touching part. Her fiance, her family, her friends, all come to try to talk her out of it. The local news channel starts to run a story about her vigil. Oh, and did I mention that she is also on a hunger strike? With all this attention, pleading, ordering around and such, Maggie stays right where she is. She knows what she wants, and is determined to have it. Good for her. You go girl.
Anyway, after much soul searching, and nearly a week of thinking about it, the lawyer finally decides he CAN love Maggie and marry her. He scoops her up in his arms, takes her to his home, bathes her, washes her hair, and they live happily ever after. Together.
The end.
A true love story. (with a kink, LOL).
