Byetta World

Byetta is an Incretin Mimetic, which is defined at http://www.byetta.com as "A new class of type 2 diabetes drugs that "mimic" the effects of naturally occurring hormones from the intestines and can help the body make more of its own insulin."

What it does is slow the rate at which your stomach empties, tells your pancreas to pump out insulin, and tells your pancreas not to pump out glucagon. Byetta helps your body keep your blood sugar in the normal range using your body's own mechanisms.

Byetta cam onto the market in June 2005, after several years of development by Amylin Pharmaceuticals. It is one of several neat drugs they offer. Byetta is manufactured by a partnership between Amylin and Eli Lilly and Company

I started taking Byetta in July 2005, after pestering my endocrinologist about it for a month. For me, it was good. For others, it is like a wonder drug. One of the "side effects" is weight loss. Unfortunately for me, I didn't lose any weight due to Byetta. But I know people who have lost up to 30 pounds.

Another side effect of Byetta is nausea. Again, I didn't suffer from that, but I understand that about 30% of users do. I run an e-mail discussion group about Byetta. It is called Diabetes_And_Byetta, and we have put together a list of tips for taking Byetta.
